Hair Care Part 1 – No Poo Shampoo

Hair Care – Shampoo and Conditioner

I have tried using less toxic beauty products for 15 years. Tried…I never loved any of the options I found. Never loved the discount store options or the pricey salon options either. My cycle is this…find something new, use it until its gone, replace once…maybe. Usually midway through the second bottle I don’t like what I at first liked about the product. The non-toxic or should I say less toxic options just ended up in my cupboard. I never finished the bottles, I couldn’t throw them away…that is wasting money. I couldn’t pass them on to someone else either. If I didn’t like, why would someone else want it. Craigslist has taught me…if I don’t want it…there is someone else out there that probably does 😉

I tried Lush…it was too smelly.

I came across this blog in my researching…just last week.

I had heard about no poo (shampoo) but really knew little more then the name. After reading though the article and looking for collaboration from a second blogger, I thought I can do this. I really can do this…I have baking soda, apple cider vinegar and 2 condiment bottles (they weren’t packed away in my storage unit either…perfect).  I did wait a few days, well my birthday was a couple days away and I wanted somewhat normal looking hair for my birthday dinner.

The recipe is super easy.

Shampoo = 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda to 1 Cup water

Conditioner = 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar to 1 Cup water

Well, I tried it this morning. I got my hair wet, pored the “shampoo” mix straight to my scalp and massaged in with my fingers. Rinsed. Pored “conditioner” on the ends of my hair. Rinsed. I have curly hair and wasn’t brave enough to not use product at all. I did use a little product, just to keep away the frizz.

I use very little product, I don’t blow dry my hair, I air dry. I stopped dyeing my hair almost 2 years ago now. That was a tough choice. I love my hair stylist, I loved sitting in her chair every 6 weeks and laughing while she made me pretty! Now I see her once a year as she is the only one that can cut my curls!
I am very happy with the results. I did smell the vinegar on my hair as it was drying, but I can’t smell it now. No frizz!! My next wash I will try without product. I will be brave! I’ll keep you posted on the success or not of this non-toxic shampoo and conditioner.
